Popa Chubby, born Ted Horowitz, has been hard rocking the blues in his fierce and soulful way for more than 25 years. Over the course of a career that dates back to , he has been a force of to be reckoned with on the guitar, and his tempestuous, soulful playing has never been more powerful. His career has always been about moving forward and carving a place for himself in the imposing terrain of the music business, overcoming odds to continue growing and maturing as a creative force. He has built a constantly increasing base of fans across the world, where in many territories he is a star. A native New Yorker, Horowitz's first gigs were in the NYC punk scene as a guitarist for what he reflects was a "crazy Japanese special effects performance artist in a kimono called Screaming Mad George who had a horror-movie inspired show. They were a threat to society.
At 13, Chubby began playing drums; shortly thereafter, he discovered the music of the Rolling Stones and began playing guitar. By the time he was in his early twenties, he enjoyed and played blues music, but also worked for a while backing punk poet Richard Hell. Chubby 's first big break was winning a national blues talent search sponsored by KLON, a public radio station in Long Beach, California. Chubby played more than club dates a year through the '90s. The disc turned out to be a slight departure, incorporating elements of contemporary pop and hip-hop.
It is somehow baffling how often record labels pick and choose artists and sign them mainly because they have what they call "a fresh face" and they might look cooler in their appearances more than others artists more skilled and talented than them. Inevitably though, although well hidden under this aforementioned layer of smooth appearance, such artists will show through times their lack of musicianship and creativity, to the point that they will disappear completely from the music scene in no time at all. It is therefore incomprehensible why an incredibly talented and multi-instrumentalist artist like Ted Horowitz, aka Popa Chubby, doesn't get snapped and get ignored by record labels and needs, instead, to get to the point to self-produce and engineer his own body of work which, in this case, it is perhaps the best album of his career to date. Released at the end of , Chubby's new album called Two Dogs, is a breathtaking journey among the musical roots of an artist constantly evolving and respecting, at the same time, the fundamentals of his vast musical background. Recorded in Chubby's own studio in New York, Two Dogs is the ultimate statement of the artist's incredible musicianship.
