Snakes are elongated, legless, carnivorous reptiles of the suborder Serpentes. Many species of snakes have skulls with several more joints than their lizard ancestors, enabling them to swallow prey much larger than their heads with their highly mobile jaws. To accommodate their narrow bodies, snakes' paired organs such as kidneys appear one in front of the other instead of side by side, and most have only one functional lung. Some species retain a pelvic girdle with a pair of vestigial claws on either side of the cloaca.
The serpent , or snake , is one of the oldest and most widespread mythological symbols. The word is derived from Latin serpens , a crawling animal or snake. Snakes have been associated with some of the oldest rituals known to mankind [1] [2] and represent dual expression [3] of good and evil. In some cultures, snakes were fertility symbols.
Amazonian puffing snakes Spilotes ; Colubridae are snakes widely distributed in the Neotropical region.
