CF is an inherited disease where the body produces thick sticky mucus that affects the lungs, liver, and digestive system. This occurs as a result of the bodies inability to transport chloride effectively. Together sodium and chloride make up salt; in order for water to be attracted to cells, chloride must be present. In patients with CF the lack of chloride transport prohibits this from taking place.

What are the different ways in which a genetic condition can be inherited?
Some genetic conditions are caused by mutations in a single gene. These conditions are usually inherited in one of several patterns, depending on the gene involved:. Many health conditions are caused by the combined effects of multiple genes described as polygenic or by interactions between genes and the environment. Such disorders usually do not follow the patterns of inheritance listed above. For more information, please see What are complex or multifactorial disorders?
Cystic Fibrosis References Cystic fibrosis CF , is one of the more thoroughly understood genetic diseases. It also provides a cautionary tale: our ability to understand genes, proteins and even cells far exceeds our ability to unravel the complex interactions that give rise to organ-level disease. It has been known for more than 50 years that cystic fibrosis is an autosomal genetic disease i. ABC family members perform several tasks, including energy-dependent transmembrane transport of large molecules, regulation of other transmembrane transporters, and the transport of ions across membranes.
