Review: Hotel Sorrento, Cock TavernCAROUSEL OF FANTASIES
I know it takes a long time to get to Australia. Although the play has won awards Down Under and features on the Australian school syllabus, it is practically unknown in the UK. The play tells the story of three grown-up, Australian sisters — Meg, Pippa and Hilary — who are reunited and forced to come to terms with their past after one of them tells all in a semi-autobiographical novel. The publication of the novel is the catalyst which brings the family back together again, unearthing issues of loyalty and cultural identity. The relationship with her son, Troy — a boyish Alex Farrow — is the emotional heart of the piece.
The Cock Tavern Theatre Presents HOTEL SORRENTO August 17- Sept 11
Continuing its commitment to bringing unduly neglected plays to a new audience, The Cock Tavern Theatre presents the UK premiere of H Annie Ray son's multi-award winning Australian classic. Buried feelings of rivalry, loss and betrayal resurface when three sisters are reunited after ten years apart. Brought together in the sleepy Australian seaside town of Sorrento they grew up in, they are forced into self-examination when one of them publishes a novel drawn upon autobiography and the family's past. Celebrated writer Meg is visiting from England where her novel has just been shortlisted for the Booker Prize.
